The witch of Cona is said to have shouted her curse from the villa's window – and three of the youths who heard it died that same night.

The decaying neoclassical Villa Magnoni outside Cona near Ferrara is one of Italy's most notorious haunted houses. According to legend, four young people entered the abandoned villa in the 1980s and saw an old woman at an upstairs window who ordered them to leave – hours later, three of them died in a car crash. After the incident the doors and windows were bricked up, but the very window where the old woman appeared is said to have been found open again and again. The "witch of Cona" is still said to watch over the house, which despite collapse risks and sealed openings continues to draw ghost hunters and the curious.
