Locals in Port Royal tell of unexplained sounds and figures around the old Naval Hospital, and many regard the catastrophe as a judgment that never quite loosened its grip on the place. Below the jetties the rest of the town still lies on the seabed — whole streets, walls and quarters that slid into the deep in a matter of minutes.

In the 17th century Port Royal was called the wickedest city on earth, a haven for pirates and privateers under men like Henry Morgan. On 7 June 1692 an earthquake turned the sand to quicksand and two thirds of the town was swallowed by the sea along with thousands of inhabitants. One survivor, Lewis Galdy, was sucked into the ground and thrown out into the sea by the next shock — his headstone at St Peter's still tells the story.
