In January 1902, 210 soldiers of Aomori's Fifth Infantry Regiment were sent on a winter exercise across the Hakkōda Mountains; a blizzard struck and 199 froze to death in one of the world's worst mountain disasters. Within weeks the press was reporting hauntings in the empty barracks — footsteps, marching calls, and voices moaning 'so cold, so cold'. On the Umatateba rise stands the bronze statue of Corporal Gotō, whom the rescue party found standing upright, unconscious in the snow. Hikers and night-time drivers still tell of crunching march-steps in the snow, uniformed columns in the mist, and soldiers who ask for directions before dissolving away.
