Heiwa Falls

Hokkaido · Japan · Natural site

At the 'Falls of Peace' on Sapporo's edge, restless spirits are said to gather around the trees as darkness falls.

By day Heiwa no Taki is a quiet picnic spot on Sapporo's western edge, but after dark the ten-metre falls are counted as the city's most feared place. The falls were once a training ground for ascetics, and rumour holds that the old spiritual barrier protecting the site has broken — ever since, wandering spirits are said to be drawn here, clustering around certain trees. By the car park stand memorial stones to Korean forced labourers who died in the area during the war, and over the years the site has been shadowed by suicides and accidents. Night visitors tell of a motionless figure staring into the falls, pounding blows on car windows, and white lights appearing in photographs.
