Jangsan Mountain rises 634 metres above the beach resort of Haeundae in Busan, and its forests are home to one of South Korea's best-known modern monsters: the Jangsanbeom. The creature is described as a tiger-like beast with long white fur that can mimic sounds to perfection – running water, a crying child, or the voice of a loved one – to lure hikers off the trails. Sightings spread explosively through internet forums in the 2000s, making it Korea's answer to Slender Man and inspiring a feature film in 2017. The fact that parts of the mountain were long a mined military zone closed to the public has only deepened its eerie reputation. Those hiking here at dusk are advised not to answer if something calls their name.
