Jayu-ro, the "Freedom Road", runs along the Han River from Seoul towards Paju and the northern border, often wrapped in thick night fog. Since the mid-2000s drivers have told of a pale woman standing motionless at the roadside; at first she seems to wear sunglasses, but in the rear-view mirror her face turns out to be grotesquely twisted with hollow eye sockets. A television programme claimed the figure is a young woman murdered along the road in 2002 whose body was not found until much later. Psychiatrists explain the sightings as fatigue, darkness and fog playing tricks – yet Jayu-ro still ranks as South Korea's most notorious haunted road, and many drivers choose not to look in the mirror.
