In the village of Kalachi, residents suddenly fell asleep in the middle of the day and slept for days on end — the riddle was never truly solved.

Between 2013 and 2016, the small steppe village of Kalachi was struck by something the world had never seen: people of all ages dropped into a deep sleep without warning and could not be woken for days. More than sixty villagers were affected, many repeatedly, waking with hallucinations, dizziness and gaps in their memory. Scientists pointed to radon gas from the flooded Soviet uranium mines in neighbouring Krasnogorsky, but the official diagnosis never got further than encephalopathy of unknown origin. The sickness stopped as abruptly as it began, most of the village was evacuated — and no one can say whether the sleep will return.
