Nong Fa Lake

Attapeu · Laos · Natural site

In the crater lake Nong Fa, a giant serpent beast is said to guard the turquoise water – whoever bathes there defies the spirits.

Deep in the mountains of Attapeu Province lies the volcanic lake Nong Fa, a turquoise crater ringed by rainforest near the Vietnamese border. Laotians refuse to swim in it: legend says the lake is home to a giant serpent-like beast that devours anyone who enters the water, and nagas and spirits are said to dwell in its depths. The hill tribes of the area tell the opposite tale – that a dip grants eternal youth – but few dare try. The lake is called bottomless; the old people say no one ever reached the bottom, however many bamboo poles they lashed together.
