A woman in white appears by the royal lake in Kandy – tuk-tuk drivers refuse to pass after midnight.
Kandy Lake was created in 1807 by Sri Lanka's last king, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, in the heart of the old royal capital. Legend holds that the woman in white was a court maidservant who fell from favour – some say she was executed, others that she drowned in the lake. Night-time strollers tell of seeing her reflection in the water, only to find the shore empty when they turn around. Many tuk-tuk drivers would rather take a detour than pass the lake after midnight.
