Vergers and visitors at Wolvendaal Church report the same thing: whispering voices, sudden cold and shadowy figures moving between the pews when the church stands empty. Beneath the heavy grave slabs of the floor lie the dead of three centuries, among them five Dutch governors of Ceylon — and it is to them the stories are most readily attached.

The church in Colombo was begun in 1749 and is one of Sri Lanka's oldest Protestant churches, built as a Greek cross in metre-thick masonry. The name means valley of wolves, after the animals the Dutch believed they saw roaming the hill. The stories have made the old colonial church a fixture of Colombo's ghost lore.
