Siesikai Castle

Ukmergė, Aukštaitija · Litauen · Castle

The duchess walled up in Siesikai's tower for her love is still said to walk down to the lake on dark nights, where her knight once waited.

The Renaissance castle of Siesikai, on the lake of the same name, carries Lithuania's best-known immurement legend. A young duchess of the Daumantas line fell in love with a foreign knight and slipped out of the castle at night for secret meetings on the lakeshore. When her husband discovered the betrayal, he condemned her to be walled up alive in the castle tower. Locals say her figure still walks from the castle down to the lake on dark nights, where her beloved awaits. During the castle's restoration, enigmatic wall paintings were found hidden under layers of paint – which has only fed the stories.
