Empress Carlota, who lost both her mind and her husband, is said to still roam the castle halls where her piano plays by itself.
Chapultepec Castle, on its hill above Mexico City, was the residence of Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlota in the 1860s. After Maximilian's execution Carlota went mad, and according to legend her spirit returns at night: staff and visitors describe a female figure in a 19th-century gown at the windows and in the carriages, doors opening on their own and a piano playing in empty rooms. Heavy footsteps and dragging chains are also reported, and the site carries the memory of the cadets who fell in the 1847 battle. The castle is today Mexico's National Museum of History.
