Beatriz de Espinosa arrived from Spain around 1550, twenty years old and so beautiful that suitors queued beneath her window. One of them, the Italian Martín de Scopoli, grew so obsessed that he stood guard in the street every night so no rival could approach. According to the legend Beatriz took a burning coal and pressed it to her own face, so that her beauty could never again be the cause of jealousy and bloodshed. She wore a black veil for the rest of her life, and the block became known as the street of the burned woman — today Jesús María in the Centro Histórico. Neighbours say a veiled female figure is seen moving along the housefronts at dusk and vanishes the moment anyone turns to look.
