Casa de Cortés (Coyoacán Town House)

Mexico City · Mexiko · Historic building

Night guards on Plaza Hidalgo hear a child laughing and running through the empty halls — and see him in the windows over the square.

The yellow eighteenth-century building on Plaza Hidalgo has served as Coyoacán's town house for centuries and is misleadingly called the house of Cortés. The legend attached to it concerns not the conquistadors but a child. Guards and night staff say they hear a boy laughing and running through the empty upstairs rooms after closing, sometimes with the sound of something rolling across the floor. Several have gone up to check and found the rooms locked and empty. From the square, passers-by have also claimed to see a small figure moving in the windows when nobody should be inside. The story is passed on by word of mouth locally and is among Coyoacán's most widely told ghost tales.
