The House of Don Juan Manuel
Mexico City · Mexiko · House
At eleven at night a tall figure in a black cloak asks you the time — and thanks you for the answer before the dagger falls.
Don Juan Manuel de Solórzano reached New Spain in 1612 and rose to become a confidant of the viceroy. Legend says jealousy ate him hollow: certain that his wife was unfaithful, he struck a bargain with the devil to learn the name of her lover. The price was that every night at eleven he must kill the first man to pass his door on República de Uruguay. Before the blade went in he always asked the same question — do you know what hour it is? — and answered it himself: fortunate you, who know the hour of your death. Neighbours still say that anyone passing the house as eleven strikes may meet a tall man in a black cloak asking exactly that, and that laments and a dry laugh drift from the gateway once the street has fallen quiet.
