The Spring of La Noria (El Charro Negro)

Mexico City · Mexiko · Natural site

El Charro Negro courted the washerwomen at the spring — and years later he and his bride were seen sitting on its bed.

In La Noria, one of Xochimilco's oldest quarters, there was a clear spring where the women went to wash. The legend tells of two sisters who were pestered there one day by an elegant man in black charro dress. When they told him to stop and threw water in his face he only laughed out loud. Soon afterwards a wedding was held in the church of San Bernardino de Siena in Xochimilco with only the couple present — one of the sisters had given in, and her family never saw her again. Years later a washerwoman came to the spring at noon; the water went mirror-still, and there on the bed of the spring sat the black charro with his bride. Locally they say he is the Devil himself.
