This 1930s British coastal fort on Bukit Batu Maung was seized by the Japanese in 1941 and turned into a prison camp where torture and beheadings became routine – after the war, locals called the place Bukit Hantu, Ghost Hill. Rediscovered in the 1990s, the fort is now Southeast Asia's largest war museum, its bunkers and underground tunnels open to visitors. Many report footsteps, voices and a uniformed figure in the tunnels, identified as the notorious executioner Tadashi Suzuki. National Geographic has ranked the museum among Asia's most haunted places, and night tours are arranged for those who dare.
