Visitors to the whitewashed house in Badagry tell of footsteps on the empty upper floor, figures glimpsed in the missionaries' old rooms and an oppressive sense of not being alone in certain parts of the building. The ghost stories have followed the house for generations and have outlasted the monument plaque outside.

The house was built between 1842 and 1845 by missionaries and counts as Nigeria's first two-storey building. Here lived Samuel Ajayi Crowther — freed from a slave ship as a child, later the first African Anglican bishop — while he translated the Bible into Yoruba. That this building, in this town, one of West Africa's great slave ports, should carry such stories surprises nobody in Badagry.
