Aeilsgat Pool

Groningen · Nederländerna · Natural site

In this pool near Oudeschip a sea-wife has been trapped since the flood of 1717 – singing young men into the depths.

The Aeilsgat is a deep pool near the village of Oudeschip on the northern coast of Groningen, torn open when the Christmas flood of 1717 broke through the dikes. According to legend, a sea-wife – a 'zeewiefke' – was trapped in the pool when the dike was closed behind her, cut off from the sea and her husband. On misty evenings she is said to sing her lament in the Groningen tongue: 'De tied is ter heer, mor de man is ter nait' – the time has come, but the man is not here. Young men lured to the pool by her song are said to have been dragged down into the depths and drowned.
