Deep in the forests of Asker, Kristiania built its new asylum when the city's old one overflowed. Dikemark opened in 1905, a whole town of grand pavilions with names like "Slottet" (the Castle) — the ward for "half-restless" men — "Utsikten" and "Kurhus". Hundreds of patients were sent here, many for life, in an era when psychiatry meant locked wards, restraint beds and coercion. Today almost everything is abandoned: 27 of 30 buildings stand empty and decaying, and the grounds are described as a ghost town. Urban explorers and night visitors tell of footsteps in empty corridors, doors slamming shut and the sense of being watched from the blind windows. The hospital museum in the Bjørkeli building preserves the memory of those who lived and died here.
