In 1043, young Hallvard Vebjørnsson pushed off across the fjord to save a pregnant woman accused of theft and hunted by three men. The men shot him through the throat with an arrow, tied a millstone round his neck and sank him in the deep. But according to the legend the body floated back up, stone and all — a miracle that made Hallvard the patron saint of Oslo. Over his shrine the great St. Hallvard's Cathedral rose in the 12th century, eastern Norway's religious centre for 500 years: coronation church, royal wedding chapel and one of Scandinavia's most visited pilgrimage sites. Today the cathedral lies in ruins in Minneparken in the Old Town, graves beneath the grass — and the millstone of the murder legend still rests in Oslo's coat of arms.
