One January night in 1532 the soldiers came from Akershus across the water — the abbey was plundered and burned, and the monks' island became a ruin overnight.

In 1147 Abbot Philippus landed on Hovedøya with twelve English Cistercian monks and dedicated the island to the Virgin Mary. Over four centuries the abbey grew into one of Norway's richest, holding estates across the region. The end came brutally: one January night in 1532, the commander of Akershus fortress attacked in revenge amid the power struggles of the age — the abbey was plundered, burned and torn down, its abbot imprisoned, the monks' world erased in hours. Its stones were later carted off to build the very fortress that destroyed them. The ruins, excavated only in 1845–47, lie today in the island's groves with the monks' graves close by. In the evening, when the last ferry has gone and sea fog creeps over the walls, the island still keeps something of the cloister night's silence.
