Deep in the Østmarka forest, on the shore of Lake Nøklevann, lie the foundations of Sarabråten — financier Thomas Heftye's fabled country estate of 1856, where Ibsen, Bjørnson, King Oscar II and the folklore collectors Asbjørnsen and Moe spent their summers. But the place is older than the parties: by tradition its name comes from "Haugkjerringa Sara", the old woman of the hill whom legend housed here long before the gentry, and who still binds the site's history together when open-air plays are staged in the ruins. The houses were demolished in 1917 to protect Nøklevann as a drinking-water source, and the last building burned in 1971. Left in the forest are only stone steps, foundations and jetty moorings — a vanished world the woods slowly devour, lit by torches on dark memorial walks.
