Torghatten, Brønnøy

Nordland · Norge · Stone formation

The hole straight through the mountain is, legend says, the shot of a troll's arrow that missed – the maiden it was meant for just made it ashore on Leka.

Torghatten is a mountain with a 160-metre tunnel bored clean through it, and Helgeland's most-told legend explains why. The troll Hestmannen caught sight of the beautiful Lekamøya bathing with the seven daughters of the Sulis king, and when she fled south along the coast and he realised he would never catch her, he drew his bow. The troll king in the Sømna mountains saw the arrow coming and hurled his hat into its path. The arrow drove through the hat and lost both speed and aim; the hat became Torghatten with the hole at its centre, the arrow lies as a skerry far out at sea, and Lekamøya just managed to throw herself ashore on Leka. Every character in the story still stands as a mountain along the coast – a whole landscape petrified at daybreak.
