Utstein on Mosterøy is Norway's only preserved medieval monastery, taken over by Augustinian canons from the royal farm in the 1200s. After the Reformation the abbey became a manor, and that is where the ghost story begins. Cecilie Widding Garmann died in childbirth in 1759, twenty-five years old, after her husband Christopher had promised never to remarry. Twenty years later he fell in love with a Danish noblewoman thirty-six years his junior. He did not dare hold the wedding at Utstein, but by legend Cecilie showed herself to him and to several guests anyway as the couple stood in Stavanger Cathedral. Ever since she has been the abbey's White Lady, and room number 10 in the guesthouse is singled out as the most restless. The story has circulated in the district for two centuries.
