Among Lima's marble mausoleums little Ricardito keeps watch – and no one lingers in the pavilion of the suicides.

South America's oldest monumental cemetery opened in 1808 and holds over 700 marble mausoleums. At the statue of six-year-old Ricardito, who died of illness in the 1870s, visitors still leave toys and prayers, convinced the boy is listening. The pavilion of the suicides is counted the most feared corner of the grounds, and in the Moorish pavilion, where unbaptised children rest, duendes are said to dwell – small beings believed to be the children's restless souls. Night tours come with whispering voices and shadows that vanish when you turn around.
