Real Felipe Fortress
Callao · Peru · Fortress
By the King's Tower bridge in Callao's fortress appears a footless lady in white, singing into the night.
The 18th-century Spanish colonial fortress is the largest Spain ever built in the Americas, its walls witness to sieges, executions and imprisoned patriots. Most famous is the white lady who appears at midnight on the bridge by the Torreón del Rey – footless, singing a mournful melody. Many hold her to be Micaela Villegas, the viceroy's mistress la Perricholi, waiting where she once met him. In the governor's house, small footprints appear that are linked to the spirit of a two-year-old child, and visitors on the official night tours report sighs, gunshots and the sense that the walls are draining their strength.
