The Cracked Bell on Kanonia
Warszawa · Polen · Urban site
The bell on Kanonia cracked before it ever rang once. Walk around it three times and make a wish, knowing whose misfortune you circle.
On the small square behind the cathedral, laid out over the Old Town's closed burial ground, lies a cracked bronze bell cast in 1646 in the famous foundry of Daniel Tym. The legend explains the crack. Tym had a daughter, Marynia, who loved Kajetan, a shoemaker's apprentice. The journeyman Hans, whom she had refused, broke into the workshop at night, poured tin into the prepared alloy and poison into his rival's beer. Kajetan died, the bell cracked at the first stroke and never reached a tower, and Marynia spent the rest of her life in a convent. Warsaw has nonetheless turned the bell into a lucky spot: touch it and walk around it three times, they say, and a wish will be granted, without always mentioning what it cost.
