Wanda refused the German suitor and threw herself into the Vistula. The mound was raised where the current brought her body ashore.

Out in Nowa Huta, by Mogila, lies a grassed-over mound first mentioned in the thirteenth century but probably raised as early as the seventh or eighth. The legend gives it a name and a victim: Wanda, daughter of Prince Krak, inherited the throne from her father and refused the hand of the German ruler Rytygier. When she understood that her refusal would bring a war of revenge down on her people, she walked to the Vistula and threw herself in. Where the current carried her body ashore, the people of Krakow built the mound. A marble lion designed by Jan Matejko marks the summit. Nowa Huta later grew up around it in concrete and steelworks, but the mound was left untouched, and locals still speak of a white figure by the water in autumn fog.
