Czersk Castle

Mazowieckie · Polen · Castle ruin

At full moon Queen Bona is said to gather pearls in the courtyard of Czersk – a necklace that breaks again and again, for all eternity.

The medieval castle ruin at Czersk, high above the old bed of the Vistula, was home to Queen Bona Sforza in the 16th century. Legend tells that a string of pearls slipped from her jewellery box, caught on the wall and snapped, scattering pearls across the courtyard. She is said to be collecting them still: at full moon a white figure appears on the walls, patiently picking up pearl after pearl – and when she finishes, they scatter once more, as they have for centuries. On Midsummer Night the White Lady is said to show herself most clearly on the battlements.
