The 13th-century castle of Czocha on the Kwisa river is often called Poland's most haunted castle. Its most famous ghost is Gertruda, sister of the knight Hartung von Klux, who allegedly betrayed the castle to the Hussites and was beheaded by her own brother in the courtyard – she now walks as a White Lady, said to leave gold coins in her wake. The castle also keeps the grim tale of the "well of unfaithful wives", into which jealous husbands supposedly lowered their spouses alive. Staff and hotel guests still report footsteps, whispers and alarms triggering for no reason; today the castle serves as a hotel and museum.
