Uniejów Castle

By the Warta river, Uniejka is said to walk again – the girl who lured robbers into the marsh to save the archbishops' treasure, and was dragged into the deep.

The archbishops' castle at Uniejów, built in the 1360s, is watched over by two white ladies of legend. The first is Uniejka: when robbers forced her beloved to reveal where the castle's gold was hidden, she put him to sleep and led the bandits into the marshes herself to lose them – but at the last moment one seized her hand and pulled her down into the bog. Ever since, a girl in a long pale gown has been seen on the banks of the Warta. The second is the wife of General Toll, who laid out the vast castle park in the 1860s and loved it so dearly that she still strolls its avenues at night, tending her realm.
