French soldiers who died of cholera were found in the foundations — and figures are said to move between the cracked mirrors.
The site carried death before the first glass was ever raised. When the casino's foundations were dug, the remains of French soldiers who had succumbed to cholera during the Crimean War were uncovered, and that is where the legend begins. Through the decades of decay, visitors in the echoing, abandoned halls told of footsteps, voices and figures moving between the cracked mirrors.
The art nouveau palace on the promenade above the Black Sea was, before the wars, Romania's most fashionable pleasure house. During the First World War, when the building served as a military hospital, it was hit by shellfire and ten people were killed. The casino has now been restored and gleams again — but its reputation for being haunted came through the renovation with it.
