A queen died at this royal palace in 1818 — and a sentry is said to have met her again that same night, a glass in her hand.

Rosersberg Palace north of Stockholm is one of Sweden’s royal palaces, and Queen Hedvig Elisabet Charlotta died here in 1818. A family legend tells of a sentry at her coffin who heard footsteps across the empty floor and suddenly stood face to face with the dead queen, who in a hoarse voice held out a glass of a yellowish drink. The palace is a listed state monument with preserved late-Gustavian interiors and guided tours in summer.
