The mansion at 10 Malaya Morskaya Street was home to Princess Natalya Golitsyna, the iron-willed society matriarch who inspired the old countess in Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades". After her death in 1837, word spread that her spirit had remained in the house, and legend held that anyone who met her had only three years left to live. Before dawn an old woman is said to appear at the windows wagging her finger, and one young man who helped an elderly lady across the street watched her dissolve into thin air. That Tchaikovsky died three years after the premiere of his Queen of Spades opera has only deepened the house's reputation.
