The Devil at the Sysslebäck Ferry

Värmland · Sverige · Sägenplats · Skrekk 3/5

A fine gentleman with a black horse took the ferry across — and as he stepped ashore, fire burst from the hooves and burned a hole in the ferryman's hat.

At Sysslebäck in Dalby it is said the devil once crossed by ferry, dressed as a fine gentleman with a black horse. He was in such a hurry that the ferry had never run so fast, and he hauled it himself. As he stepped ashore, fire flared beneath the horse's hooves, and the coin he had dropped in the ferryman's hat had burned a hole and vanished. In the same district "Old Erik" was said to linger at drinking-bouts and brawls, ready to take whoever fell.
