In Rumskulla people remembered Asp, a notorious thief said to know more than other men. According to the legend, anyone wishing to learn his arts had to walk three times counterclockwise around the church on three Thursday mornings, take a particular blade of grass, wet it in blood from his ring finger, and push it into the keyhole of the church door. Then the master of secrets himself would appear. Yet Asp was not all mischief — once he is said to have merely laid his hand on a lock to make a jammed writing-desk flap spring open by itself.
