One priest harboured Old Erik too long – and another had to be summoned to drive him out through the leaded pane.

A priest in Rakkestad kept too familiar company with Old Erik and finally sent for Thams of Eidsberg to be rid of him. On the way Old Erik threw off one of the carriage wheels, but Thams forced him to hold up all the way there. Inside the cottage the Evil One crept under the table, and Thams banished him through a hole pricked in the window's lead – not through the chimney, as he had asked, for he would have torn it down. The whole cottage shook as he went out.
