Tore got a ride from a stranger who drove over both ground and air — and realised too late he had scraped a church spire on a journey with the devil himself.

From Eidskog it is told of Tore Rönningen of Gaustad, who on his way home from Christiania got a ride from a strange man who drove furiously fast, over both ground and air. When something scraped against the runner, the man said it was only the spire of Oppstad church. The man was bound for a neighbouring farm to ease a woman in labour, but Tore warned the neighbours, which enraged the devil. Then the devil came as a black hound and growled under the table for several nights, until the priest Mentz Rynning drove him out.
