From Vefsn it is told of Petter Dass of Alstadhaug, who, through envious foes, received a royal summons to preach in the castle church in Copenhagen only the day before. He called on the devil and asked for the swiftest ride; they agreed on one as fast as human thought. Midway over the sea the devil flew so low the priest's legs grazed the water, and asked what Peter said in distress at sea — "Higher up and straight ahead, you Satan!" answered Dass. He preached with full force and was home again before his curate had left the church at Alstadhaug.
