Two men fought the current on Christmas Eve – until a stranger rowed them home for a single barrel of ale.

Then a stranger came rowing through rushing water, heedless of sea or stream, and promised to bring them home for a barrel of ale. They reached home in good time, and the rower got his ale. The legend says it was the devil himself who had rowed.
