In Oravais an old man was to work a charm for a girl and took her reluctant suitor to the churchyard. By the bell tower the Evil One lay with glowing eyes and a long, fire-red tongue. The boy dared not say a word, turned, spat three times and fled home. He never got the girl, for the old man held that a wife topples a man worse than the Devil.
