Twelve cows came walking down the snowy mountain, led by a strange woman knitting as she went – until the father ran up the slope and the whole procession was gone.
A man from Funäsdalen remembered how it happened when he was sixteen. His brother came running in saying he had seen a herd of cows up on Funäsdalsberget. Their father was angry – you're lying, boy, no cows are out at this time of year – for it was early spring and snow still lay on the mountain. The whole family ran out anyway, and then they saw twelve cows come walking down from the mountain out of the east. Ahead of the cows went a young, fine-looking woman, bare-headed and dressed in clothes of a different sort from those worn in the district, and she was knitting a stocking as she walked. Behind her came a boy with a basket, without a coat but in a smock and a straw hat. The father, who had never believed in apparitions, ran up the slope to see what it was – and then the whole procession was gone. Vitter cows, the same 1926 account adds, were quite common in these parts.
