Gubbträsk

Lappland · Sverige · Farmstead

Pedlars who took shelter with the Gubbträsk man were never seen again. At last he had the church announce for a herd boy – and one came.

In the village of Gubbträsk there lived, some generations ago, a farmer known as the Gubbträsk man. He and his household were notorious far and wide for their godlessness. Travelling pedlars who journeyed through these parts would sometimes take shelter with him, and afterwards were never seen again. Servants vanished too. For the neighbours the farm was a horror, and the arm of the law did not reach this far into the wilderness; the sheriff had been there without achieving anything. When the farm had become so ill-reputed, it grew impossible for the farmer to find a herd boy. One spring he darkened in mood and said he saw no other way than to have the church announce for a herd-devil. So he did, and the priest read the announcement three Sundays running. Then a boy came, ragged and filthy, and asked after the position. He was taken on – and after that something very strange settled over the house.
