The farmhand took ten crowns in earnest money from a fine gentleman – by morning only a chip of wood lay in his hand, and at midnight on the third night the church door opened.
A farmhand in the Torne Valley had served a farmer for some years, and during the week of parish examinations he was looking for a new position. One evening he met a fine gentleman who asked whether he would take service with him. The farmhand was willing enough, having nothing against serving so distinguished a man. He received ten crowns as earnest money, and the gentleman promised to come and fetch him at twelve at night three days later. The next morning the farmhand went to take out his coin – but instead of money only a chip of wood lay in his hand. He went to the priest and told him everything, and the priest promised to help. On the third day the priest led him to the altar in the church and told him not to leave the spot until the priest himself came for him the following day. At the stroke of twelve the church door opened and the stranger stepped in – but came no nearer than three paces from the altar. Then he began to change shape.
