Three people died within a metre of one another at the mill – and the horses refused to walk the last stretch up to the wheel.

The mill green by Kvarnbäcken is one of the most talked-about haunted spots in the Luleå district and a station on the fifty-kilometre heritage trail known as the Legend Trail. It was above all the horses that suffered. Already on the way up towards the mill the animals would toss their heads and snort loudly, and once there a horse might stop dead and refuse to go further. The remedy was to throw an iron object through the bridle – but then you had to fling yourself back onto the cart at once, for the horse would run without stopping all the way home to the stable. Not even there were the animals left in peace: however well tied, the ropes came undone by themselves. The mill fared no better. The great wheel could stop dead and proved impossible to restart until a burning object was thrown through the hole in the hub. The explanation the legend offers: three people died in accidents on almost exactly the same spot, and their souls are said never to have left it.
