The Bocksten Bog

Halland · Sverige · Natural site

In Bocksten Bog near Åkulla outside Varberg, two children found a man in 1936 who had lain in the peat since the 1300s. An oak stake had been driven through his heart, the remains of two birch stakes lay by the body, and he had been buried face down. The Halland Museum of Cultural History interprets this as humiliation and an attempt to prevent him from returning after death. How he died, however, has not been established, and neither his name nor his occupation is known. The peat preserved what normally decays: hair, wood, leather and an unusually complete woollen costume with cloak, tunic, hose and hood, dated to around 1350–1370. The find spot is marked and reached by a boardwalk path from the car park. The skeleton, the costume and a facial reconstruction are on display at the museum in Varberg Fortress.
