Bled Island
Gorenjska · Slovenia · Church
From the depths of Lake Bled, a drowned church bell is said to toll on clear nights – cast by a grieving widow at the castle.
Around 1534 a young widow lived at Bled Castle, her husband murdered by robbers and thrown into the lake. From her silver and gold she had a small bell cast for the chapel on the island in the lake's midst, but during the crossing a storm sank the boat, and the bell went down into the depths with the oarsmen. Legend says that on still, clear nights the bell can yet be heard tolling from the lakebed. The widow gave all she owned to a new church on the island and entered a convent in Rome, and the pope sent a new bell to the island – the wishing bell, said to grant a wish to whoever rings it.
