Orava Castle clings to a 112-metre crag above the Orava river and ranks among Europe's most dramatic strongholds – it was here that the horror classic Nosferatu was filmed in 1922. The castle's own legend concerns its White Lady: the wife of a harsh lord, who defied her husband to save a servant's life and as punishment had her hand cut off, dying of blood poisoning. Her white figure has been said to walk the halls ever since, accompanied by drifting lights and a sudden sense of not being alone. The combination of vampire-film scenery and the sorrowful legend makes Orava perhaps Slovakia's eeriest castle setting.
