Mae Ramphueng Beach

Rayong · Thailand · Natural site

This miles-long beach in Rayong is known as 'the beach that eats people' — the spirits of the drowned are said to pull new victims under.

Mae Ramphueng is one of Thailand's longest beaches, a soft arc of sand southeast of Rayong city — and notorious among Thais as the beach that eats people. Its currents have claimed an unusually high number of drowning victims, and in folk belief those who die in the water become phi tai hong, restless spirits of violent death who must drag down a replacement to be freed. Swimmers tell of hands gripping their legs and of figures standing at the water's edge at dusk. Warning signs now line the beach, and spirit houses have been raised for the dead.
